On May 21, Money Today reported that Kim Sae-ron was in a relationship with an older, high-profile male idol, referred to as "A," around 2018.

Written by acclaimed screenwriter Noh Hee-kyung, Show Business is set in the ruthless and glittering Korean entertainment industry during the 1960s to 1980s. The series will follow ambitious dreamers who, despite having nothing, risk everything in pursuit of stardom, meaning, and survival.

With a powerhouse cast led by The Glory’s Song Hye-kyo and Squid Game’s Gong Yoo, the series—scheduled to premiere in 2026—is already being hailed as one of the most anticipated Korean dramas of the year.

During an interview with News1 on the morning of May 19 at a café in Jongno, Seoul, Cho commented: “It’s a project we all worked hard on, and there’s a lot of affection tied to it. According to Taiwan’s Sanli News Network and other local outlets on the 17th (local time), 7-Eleven Taiwan is currently considering filing a damages claim against Kim Soo-hyun, estimated at NT$130 million—roughly ₩6 billion KRW.

Kim had been scheduled to appear as a brand ambassador at the Kaohsiung Cherry Blossom Festival in March. However, he canceled the appearance due to ongoing personal controversy. Leading up to the event, 7-Eleven had prepared limited-edition product launches—including fresh food items, coffee cups, and cup sleeves—featuring Kim’s image. They had also announced 200 fans selected to attend his meet-and-greet.

The cancellation reportedly caused an estimated NT$100 million (approx. ₩4.6 billion) in losses due to canceled product releases. Including discarded inventory and advertising losses, the total damage is said to reach NT$130 million (approx. ₩6 billion).

This figure is nearly four times higher than the previously speculated NT$30 million (₩1.3 billion) penalty, and the company reportedly suffered both brand image damage and significant financial loss.

At the time, Kim’s agency Gold Medalist stated that the Taiwan event had not been canceled but merely “postponed for safety reasons.” 7-Eleven has yet to release an official statement. This is, however, not the only legal battle Kim is facing. Last month, he was sued by three Korean companies, with the combined lawsuit value reaching approximately ₩6 billion KRW.

Two companies (referred to as A and B) filed lawsuits against Kim and Gold Medalist at the end of last month, demanding a refund of his model fees and compensation for damages—together totaling ₩3 billion KRW. Another company, referred to as D, filed a separate ₩2.8 billion KRW claim with the Seoul Central District Court on April 25.

Kim Soo-hyun is also facing a storm of allegations involving the late actress Kim Sae-ron (25). He is accused of having been in a relationship with her for six years, starting when she was still a minor. Kim Sae-ron was found dead at her home in Seongdong-gu, Seoul, on February 16, Kim Soo-hyun’s birthday.

Her family claims the two had dated since 2015, when she was underage, and provided photos, messages, and handwritten letters to the YouTube channel Garo Sero Institute as evidence. Disputes also continue over a ₩700 million KRW penalty notice related to Kim Sae-ron’s past drunk driving accident involving Gold Medalist.

At a tearful press conference on March 31, Kim Soo-hyun denied dating her as a minor, stating:

“I never dated her when she was underage. The idea that she made a tragic decision because I ignored her or my agency pressured her over debts is also false.”

He also challenged the authenticity of KakaoTalk messages from 2016 and 2018, which the bereaved family had made public. Kim has since filed civil and criminal suits, including a ₩12 billion KRW defamation lawsuit against the family and figures such as Kim Se-ui. On May 9, he also filed additional complaints for defamation under the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection.

Among the key 2049 demographic, the show also led its time slot across all channels, including terrestrial networks—scoring 4.6% average and 5.2% peak in Seoul, and 4.5% average and 4.9% peak nationwide.

This makes it the first Friday-Saturday MBC drama in history to start in the 1% range and repeatedly drop into the 0% range. Previously, Kokdu: Season of Deity (2023), starring Kim Jung-hyun and Im Soo-hyang, held the record for lowest ratings at 1.3%. Crushology 101 has now replaced it with an even lower average.

On May 14, IU’s agency EDAM Entertainment announced a special celebration for her birthday called ‘IU HBD CAFE’, inviting fans to enjoy complimentary drinks and gifts at select cafés in Seoul from May 15 to 18.

According to an exclusive report by Maeil Business Newspaper on May 13, the Seoul Southern District Court’s Criminal Agreement Division 15 (Judge Yang Hwan-seung) officially selected Bang as a witness on May 8 and has issued a subpoena. Unless special circumstances arise, Bang is expected to appear for questioning in court on June 20.

Prosecutors are focusing on a meeting held on February 14, 2023, between Bang and Kim during a critical point in the SM Entertainment acquisition saga. After negotiations between HYBE and Kakao reportedly fell through, Bang allegedly met Kim and made a direct appeal:

“HYBE wants to acquire SM Entertainment—please help us.”

Sources say Kakao gave no clear response at the time. Prosecutors believe Bang explicitly asked Kim not to pursue SM’s management rights, but Kim rejected the request.

In a previous hearing, prosecutors explained the significance of the meeting:

“Bang Si-hyuk is the HYBE chairman who submitted a formal complaint to the Financial Supervisory Service, accusing Kakao of blocking a public tender offer by purchasing a large volume of SM shares. The February 14 meeting is a critical element of this case, which is why Bang has been called as a witness.”

Kim is accused of colluding with private equity firm One Asia Partners to manipulate SM Entertainment’s stock price during the 2023 acquisition battle. Prosecutors allege that Kim acted with the intent to block HYBE’s ₩120,000-per-share tender offer by artificially inflating the market price.

This trial is part of a broader legal investigation into market manipulation and anticompetitive practices during one of K-pop’s most dramatic corporate battles—HYBE vs. Kakao over control of SM Entertainment.

Despite the legal developments, Bang has maintained a public presence. He attended a shareholders’ meeting in Seoul earlier this year and has been spotted at concerts for HYBE artists, including BTS’s J-Hope, LESSERAFIM, and TOMORROW X TOGETHER (TXT).

The First Night with the Duke (or I Stole the Male Lead’s First Night) follows a typical college student who finds herself trapped inside the world of a historical romance novel—reborn as a minor background character. But things spiral out of control when she ends up spending the night with the novel’s obsessive male lead, setting off a wild, no-brakes deviation from the original story.

Seohyun plays Cha Seon-jaek, a privileged noblewoman with status and wealth in the Joseon-era romance novel. Originally a forgettable side character, her life takes a turn when the soul of web novel superfan "K" (a college student from the modern world) possesses her body, turning Seon-jaek into a whole new person.

K initially intends to stay out of the spotlight, observing the story from the sidelines. But as she gets drawn into unexpected events, she begins to alter the course of the novel—becoming its true heroine in the process.

The released stills show K in her real-world form—glasses on, hoodie up, reading a web novel with an expression of detached boredom. In contrast, her possessed version of Cha Seon-jaek displays a mischievous smile, hinting at a character ready to rewrite her fate.

Seohyun shared her thoughts on why she chose the role:

“I was drawn to the story’s mix of comedy, tension, and a character who’s as charming as she is bizarre.”

She also described her layered approach to playing the role:

“In the modern world, K is a bit cynical but relatable. The original Cha Seon-jaek is hollow and stuck in a routine. But once K takes over, she begins to act on impulses she couldn’t in reality, fully embracing the absurdity of the novel’s world.”

Starring opposite Seohyun is Ok Taecyeon, known for his versatility in both idol and acting roles. In I Took the Male Lead’s First Night, Taecyeon plays the novel’s ultimate male lead, a character full of obsessive intensity and possessiveness—classic traits of the "over-the-top" romantic hero in web novels.

His chemistry with Seohyun is expected to be a major highlight of the series, especially as their characters navigate a bizarre romance full of emotional twists, misunderstandings, and power shifts. With both stars coming from idol backgrounds and proving their acting chops, fans are eager to see how their dynamic unfolds in this genre-bending tale.

BOYNEXTDOOR’s 4th EP titled No Genre, officially released on May 13, 2025, at 6 PM KST. As the title suggests, the album breaks free from conventional musical boundaries, showcasing the group's playful charm and dynamic sound across a mix of styles.

On May 13, the cast and crew of Dear Hongrang—including director Kim Hong-sun, and actors Lee Jae-wook, Jo Bo-ah, Jung Ga-ram, Uhm Ji-won, and Park Byung-eun—attended a press conference held at the Ramada Hotel in Sindorim, Seoul.

When asked why she chose to join the project, Jo Bo-ah said,

“What stood out to me was the sibling dynamic. That sense of deep brother-sister affection is something I personally connect with. I’m very close to my own younger sibling, so I was drawn to the emotional bond the character feels for her missing brother, Hong-rang.”

She also praised her co-star Lee Jae-wook, saying,

“His attitude was just… flavorful. He’s genuinely passionate about the craft—whether it’s the acting, the story, or the character. He has ambition and drive, and I found that inspiring. I learned a lot and grew to respect him.”

Dear Hongrang is a mystery-romance historical drama centered on Hong-rang (played by Lee Jae-wook), the long-lost son of Joseon’s largest merchant clan, who returns after 12 years with no memory of his past. Only his stepsister Jae-yi (Jo Bo-ah) doubts his identity, and a strange emotional bond begins to form between the two.

Meanwhile, Jo Bo-ah was previously slated to star alongside Kim Soo-hyun in the Disney+ original series Knock-Off. However, the project has been placed on indefinite hold following controversy surrounding Kim Soo-hyun’s alleged past relationship with actress Kim Sae-ron, who was a minor at the time of the reported incident. The ongoing scandal has resulted in several of Kim's brand deals being terminated and has cast uncertainty over the future of Knock-Off.

Despite this setback, Jo Bo-ah’s upcoming Netflix series Dear Hongrang continues to move forward, with its premiere scheduled for May 16. Fans have rallied behind Jo, expressing their support for the actress, who has been unintentionally impacted by the surrounding controversy.
