What is Norovirus?

Norovirus gastroenteritis is a type of food poisoning caused by norovirus, which becomes particularly active during the winter months. It is commonly transmitted through raw or undercooked shellfish, vegetables, and fruits. The virus can also spread through food prepared by infected individuals or by touching objects handled by someone who is infected.

Symptoms and Recovery

The virus typically incubates for 24–48 hours before symptoms such as vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea appear. Not everyone who eats contaminated food gets infected, as the likelihood of infection depends on gut immunity. Those with weaker gastrointestinal health or liver conditions are at a higher risk of infection.

There is currently no vaccine or antiviral medication for norovirus, and most patients recover naturally within a few days. However, severe dehydration may require medical attention, including IV fluids.

Prevention Tips

To prevent norovirus:

Cook vegetables and shellfish thoroughly at 85°C (185°F) or higher for at least one minute.

Wash hands frequently for at least 20 seconds to effectively remove the virus.

Avoid food preparation for at least three days if experiencing symptoms such as diarrhea or vomiting.

According to the Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, there were 914 cases of norovirus infections in the country in 2022. Due to its high mutation rate and over 150 strains, individuals can become reinfected even after recovery.

Foods such as salads, sandwiches, and freeze-dried fruits, as well as oysters, are known carriers of norovirus. Contaminated cooking environments or infected individuals handling food or objects can also contribute to outbreaks.

Norovirus is highly adhesive, making proper hygiene essential for prevention. Washing hands thoroughly and maintaining clean cooking practices are crucial to minimizing the risk of infection.
