A Go-Board Battle Between Legends, Inspired by True Events
The highly anticipated Korean film The Match has released its first official stills ahead of its theatrical debut next month.

Based on real-life figures, the movie follows the legendary Go player Cho Hun-hyun (played by Lee Byung-hun) as he faces defeat against his own protégé, Lee Chang-ho (Kim Kang-hoon), and attempts to reclaim his place at the top through sheer competitive spirit.

The newly unveiled images offer a glimpse into the intense master-apprentice rivalry, featuring Lee Byung-hun and Kim Kang-hoon’s dynamic on-screen chemistry. One still captures Cho Hun-hyun basking in the spotlight at a major global Go tournament, reflecting his nationwide hero status at the time. Another highlights a pivotal moment where the young prodigy Lee Chang-ho fearlessly makes his move against the revered master, setting the stage for a gripping competition.

Other supporting cast members bring depth to the story. Go Chang-seok transforms into Chun Seung-pil, a journalist and professional Go player witnessing the legendary showdown up close. Hyun Bong-sik, sporting a period-accurate curly hairstyle, portrays Lee Yong-kak, the figure who initially connected Cho and Lee as mentor and student. Meanwhile, Moon Jung-hee, who plays Cho’s wife Jung Mi-hwa, adds emotional weight to the film, portraying the complexities of supporting both her husband and his protégé under one roof.

Yoo Ah-in’s Comeback Amid Controversy
The role of adult Lee Chang-ho is played by Yoo Ah-in, marking his first project since facing drug-related legal issues. Yoo, who was sentenced to one year in prison with a two-year probation earlier this month, was released on February 18 after his appeal trial. With The Match officially set as his comeback film, the industry is closely watching how his performance will be received.

Release Date
Directed by Kim Hyung-joo, The Match is slated to hit theaters on March 26 (Wednesday).
