한국에서 중요한 잔치 중 하나는 아기의 첫 생일을 축하하는 ‘돌잔치’다. 이 잔치는 아기의 풍요롭고 건강한 삶을 축복하고 기원하기 위한 것이다. 이 잔치의 하이라이트는 ‘돌잡이’로 아기 앞에 다양한 물건을 두고 아기에게 한두 가지 물건을 잡으라고 독려한다.

각 물건은 직업이나 생활방식과 같은 아이의 특정한 미래를 나타낸다. 붓·펜이나 판사봉 또는 청진기는 아기가 언젠가 '학자, 법률 전문가, 또는 의사가 되리라'는 것을 의미한다. 만약 아기가 동전이나 실 또는 구리로 된 명판을 집어 든다면, '부자가 되거나 장수하거나 언젠가 공무원이 되리라'는 것을 의미한다.

최근에는 마이크, 컴퓨터 마우스 또는 작은 축구공이 포함되었으며, 이 물건들은 각각 연예인, 소프트웨어 엔지니어 또는 운동선수로서의 미래를 상징한다.

Life Prediction Ceremony On The First Birthday

An important Korean ceremony is the celebration of a baby's first birthday, known as doljanchi (돌잔치 ‒ pronounced dol-jan-chi). The ceremony is held to bless the child with a prosperous and healthy life. The highlight of this ceremony is where a variety of objects are placed in front of the baby and the baby is encouraged to grab one or two items.

Each of the items represents a different future for the child in terms of career or lifestyle. A brush, a gavel, or a stethoscope may mean that the baby will become a scholar, a legislator, or a medical doctor someday. If the baby picks up coins or threads or a copper plaque, this may mean that the baby will be wealthy or live a long life or become a government official someday.

More recently included objects are things like a microphone, a computer mouse, or a tiny soccer ball representing a future in the entertainment industry, software engineering, or athletics.
