윷놀이는 추석이나 설날 등 한국의 명절 때 가족들이 함께 즐기는 한국식 전통 보드게임이다. 이 보드게임은 한쪽은 평평하고 다른 한쪽은 둥근 4개의 나무 막대기(윷가락)를 던져 나온 개수만큼 말판을 돌아 통과해야 하는 게임이다. 이기기 위해서는 4개의 말이 모두 출발점으로 되돌아와야 한다. 만약 운이 좋아서 방향을 바꿀 수 있는 보드의 모서리에 멈춘다면, 지름길로 도착점까지 갈 수 있다. 네 개 윷가락의 평평한 면과 둥근 면이 만드는 다양한 조합은 서로 다른 숫자를 나타내며 게임 참가자는 숫자에 따라 말을 움직일 수 있다. 이 게임은 단순해 보이지만 승리하기 위해서는 많은 전략과 전술이 필요하다. 경쟁하는 게임임에도 불구하고, 윷놀이는 전통적인 명절에 가족 간에 화합을 도모할 수 있다.

Yut Nori, Korean Board Game

Yut nori (윷놀이 ‒ pronounced yut no-ri) is a traditional Korean board game and is played among family members on traditional Korean holidays (Cheosok and Seoullal). This board game comes with a set of four wooden sticks that are flat on one side and round on the other. The aim is to return all of your four pawns to the starting point. And if you are lucky enough to stop on one of the corners, you can even take a shortcut to reach the end. Different combination of the four sticks (whether flat or rounded) represents different numbers and allows the player to advance on the board accordingly. This game seems like a simple game but requires a lot of strategy and tactics in order to win. Despite the competitive nature of this game, it brings a sense of harmony among family members on these traditional holidays.
