<39> 어려울 때 서로 돕는다

한국에는 ‘품앗이’라고 불리는 서로 돕는 풍습이 있는데, 이 또한 한국 문화의 ‘정’에서 유래되었다. 옛날에는 농부가 논농사를 하며 어려워할 때, 혼자 감당하기보다는 이웃이 와서 서로 돕곤 했었다. 서바이벌 시리즈 ‘오징어 게임’에서도 같은 생각을 하는 사람들이 서로 도움을 주고받는 장면이 나온다. 1997년, 아시아 금융 위기가 한국을 휩쓸었을 때, 한국은 파산 직전인 상태였다. 이 위기를 극복하기 위해 국제통화기금 (IMF)으로부터 외화를 빌려야만 했다. 최대한 빨리 위기를 극복하자는 공통된 목표로, 한국인들은 힘을 합해 국가 부채를 갚기 위해 금과 귀중품을 기부했다. 집계된 금의 양은 무려 226톤에 달했고, 이 ‘금 모으기 운동’ 덕분에 한국은 예상보다 빨리 금융 위기에서 벗어날 수 있었다. 국가가 어려움에 직면했을 때, 한국민들은 함께 뜻을 모아 더 큰 공공의 이익을 위해 그들의 소중한 귀중품을 헌납했고, 전 세계에 모범이 될 수 있는 ‘품앗이’ 문화를 보여주었다.

Helping Others In Need

There is a custom in Korea of helping others in return for their help called pumasi (품앗이 ‒ pronounced poom-a-si), which is also derived from the jeong aspect of Korean culture. Long ago, when one farmer had a difficult task to accomplish, such as building a new rice paddy, rather than facing the task by himself, his neighbors would come and help. They would work together to build the new rice paddy, with each neighbor knowing that the farmer would return the favor when they needed help. Even in the survival series Squid Game, there are scenes where like-minded people give and receive help. When the Asian financial crisis hit Korea in 1997, the country was on the verge of bankruptcy. With the common goal of ending this crisis as soon as possible, Koreans came together and donated gold and precious jewelry to pay off the national debt. The amount of gold collected amounted to an incredible 226 tons. Thanks to this gold-collection movement, Korea was able to navigate out of the crisis sooner than anticipated. When our nation faced difficulty, the people came together and sacrificed their financial and sentimental valuables to contribute to the greater good, demonstrating the pumasi culture for the whole world to see.
