‘Broken’ takes over the box office as it dethrones ‘Hitman 2’ in real-time ticketing charts.

The newly released Korean thriller Broken, directed by Kim Jin-hwang, has surged past a 22% real-time booking rate on its opening day, February 5, overtaking Hitman 2, which had been dominating the box office for nine consecutive days. The gripping mystery film stars Ha Jung-woo, Kim Nam-gil, Yoo Da-in, Jung Man-sik, and Lim Sung-jae, weaving a suspenseful tale of revenge and hidden secrets.

The plot follows Min-tae, played by Ha Jung-woo, as he embarks on a relentless pursuit of the truth behind his brother’s death, his missing sister-in-law, and a best-selling novel that eerily predicts the events of that fateful night. According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticketing system, Broken recorded a real-time ticketing rate of 22.3% as of 10:30 a.m. on its opening day, drawing 47,089 pre-booked viewers and claiming the top spot in the real-time rankings. With 1,554 cumulative admissions so far, the film is already signaling a potential shift in the box office landscape.
Top real-time ticketing rankings as of February 5 placed Broken at 22.3% in first place, followed by Secret: Untold Melody at 21.4%, and Hitman 2 at 11.9%. Dark Nuns came in fourth at 10.6%, followed by The Fall: Director’s Cut (3.2%), IU Concert: The Winning (2.3%), Substance (2.3%).
The on-screen collaboration between Ha Jung-woo and Kim Nam-gil has generated significant buzz, with audiences praising the intense plot and high-quality direction. Given its strong pre-booking figures, industry insiders predict that Broken could see a significant increase in its screen share in the coming days. Ha Jung-woo has expressed his passion for the film, sharing in a recent interview, “This was the most hard-boiled script I’ve read in a while. What captivated me was the raw energy of the characters and how they each fight for survival in their own way.”
Fans eagerly awaiting the release have taken to social media to share their excitement, saying, “Ha Jung-woo and Kim Nam-gil together? This is a must-watch,” “The trailer had me gasping,” “Kim Nam-gil never disappoints. Let’s aim for 10 million viewers,” and “The intensity is off the charts.”

Key box office players as of February 4 include Hitman 2 with 38,669 viewers and 2,049,700 cumulative admissions, followed by Dark Nuns with 24,747 viewers and 1,482,749 cumulative admissions. Secret: Untold Melody came in third with 21,194 viewers and 393,882 cumulative admissions, while Substance had 5,586 viewers and 391,765 cumulative admissions. Harbin placed fifth with 5,096 viewers and 4,873,675 cumulative admissions.
Broken offers three must-watch highlights for audiences. The first is Ha Jung-woo’s explosive pursuit of justice as Min-tae, a man driven to uncover the truth behind his brother’s death. His relentless pursuit leads him to uncover hidden clues and face off against powerful figures, including gang boss Chang-mo, played by Jung Man-sik, and enforcer Byung-gyu, played by Lim Sung-jae. Ha’s signature intensity and action-packed performance promise to keep audiences glued to their seats.

The second key highlight is the mysterious novel Night Journey, which raises questions about whether it reflects reality or is a manipulation. Kim Nam-gil plays best-selling novelist Ho-ryeong, whose book 'Night Journey' seems to predict real-life events, including the death of Seok-tae, played by Park Jong-hwan. As the story unfolds, the connection between the novel and reality deepens, with Ho-ryeong’s relationship with Moon-young, played by Yoo Da-in, adding to the mystery. The film’s blending of fiction and reality will ignite audiences’ detective instincts.
The third highlight centers on the vanishing of Moon-young and the secrets she may be hiding. Following Seok-tae’s death, his wife Moon-young disappears, sparking Min-tae’s intense search for her. But is she running out of fear, or does she have something to hide? As Min-tae closes in, unexpected twists and reveals add layers of suspense that will keep viewers on edge.
With its fast-paced narrative and emotionally charged performances, Broken is poised to leave a lasting impact.
