In an official statement released on April 30, SM Entertainment said,

“Sungmin’s exclusive contract has ended. We thank him deeply for the past two decades together and will continue to support his new journey.”

Sungmin also took to his personal Instagram to reflect on the moment:

“My long journey, which began with an SM audition in December 2000 when I was just a third-year middle school student, has come to an end. SM has been a teacher, family, and friend to me.”

He continued,

“Now, I’m back at the starting line, chasing a new dream. I’m joining Totalset Entertainment and will walk this new road with sincerity and humility. I promise to return your support through heartfelt music and performances.”

Sungmin debuted in 2005 with Super Junior, and since then has taken part in various unit groups, released solo albums, performed in musicals, and appeared in variety shows. He has also remained active through his YouTube channel and music releases.

His next chapter begins with Totalset Entertainment, home to trot stars like Park Gun and Hong Ja. Notably, Sungmin becomes the first idol from SM Entertainment to transition into a trot singer.

Other SM idols who recently parted ways with the label include Girls’ Generation’s Sunny, who joined a company founded by Lee Soo-man, and Red Velvet’s Wendy and Yeri, who signed with Ascendio, home to fromis_9 members.

Sungmin married actress Kim Sa-eun in December 2014 and welcomed their son in September 2023. Since marriage, he has focused on solo activities and officially debuted as a trot singer in 2023.
