많은 이들이 '세미콜론 타투'하는 이유

최근 인스타그램에 새로운 트렌드가 번지고 있다. 손목에 세미콜론(;) 타투를 한 사진을 올리는 것이다.

이러한 타투는 패션의 일종으로 생각하기 쉽지만 사실은 깊은 의미가 담겨 있다. 비영리기구인 '세미콜론 프로젝트'는 우울증과 중독, 자해, 자살 생각 등으로 어려움을 겪고 있는 이들에게 희망과 사랑의 메시지를 전달하기 위해 이 프로젝트를 마련했다.

그렇다면 왜 세미콜론일까? 세미콜론 프로젝트는 이에 대해 "세미콜론은 저자가 문장을 마칠 수 있었지만 끝내지 않기로 선택했을 때 사용된다"며 "저자는 당신이고 문장은 당신의 인생"이라고 홈페이지에서 밝혔다. "당신의 이야기는 아직 끝나지 않았다", "당신의 가장 좋은 때는 아직 오지 않았다"라는 의미라는 것이다.

이 프로젝트를 시작한 에이미 블로엘(Amy Bleuel)은 13살 때 처음으로 강간을 당했다. 이후 고통 속에서 여러 번 자해를 시도했다. 18세에는 아버지가 스스로 목숨을 끊었다. 불행의 연속에 에이미는 극심한 우울증에 시달리며 약물에 빠졌다.

하지만 희망의 끈을 놓지 않은 에이미는 현재의 남편을 만나면서 인생의 전환점을 맞게 됐다. 에이미는 "처음으로 진정한 사랑을 경험했다"며 "이러한 인생 경험을 하면서 자신이 쓸모없다고 여기는 사람들에게 용기를 주기 위해 이 프로젝트를 시작하게 됐다"고 설명했다.

2013년에 시작된 세미콜론 프로젝트에는 현재까지 수천 명의 사람들이 참여했다. 세미콜론 타투를 한 사람들의 사진이다.
