<52> 언제 국수를 먹을 수 있어요?

한국에서는 결혼 전인 사람들에게 흔히 물어보는 말이 있다. ‘언제쯤 국수를 먹을 수 있나?’라는 질문인데, 언제쯤 결혼할 것인지를 묻는 것이다. 결혼식 이후 축하 식사에는 흔히 국수가 제공된다. 이런 이유로 결혼을 언제 할 거냐는 말 대신 ‘언제 사람들에게 국수를 먹여 줄 거냐’라고 묻는 것이다. 결혼식에서 국수가 제공되는 이유로는 세 가지 의미가 내포돼 있다고 전해진다. 첫째는 신랑 신부가 기다란 국수 가락처럼 오래 장수하기를 바라는 의미이고, 둘째는 국수 가락처럼 부부의 연이 오래 이어지길 바라는 의미이며, 셋째는 국수를 먹을 때 술술 잘 넘어가듯 고된 시집살이도 술술 잘 해나가길 바라는 마음이 담겨있다. 지금은 한국에서 국수가 흔한 음식이 됐지만, 과거에는 국수를 만드는 밀이 귀해 결혼식이나 잔치 때 같은 특별한 날에만 먹을 수 있는 귀한 음식으로 대접받았었다.

When Can I Have Noodles?

In Korea, there is a common question that is asked of people who are not married yet. It is ‘When can I eat noodles?’, (언제 국수를 먹을 수 있어요? - pronounced eon-je gook-su-reul meog-eul-su it-seo-yo?) which carries the meaning of asking when the person will marry. Noodles are often served after weddings as a celebratory meal. This is why, instead of asking when a person will get married, people ask when they will be offering noodles to people. It is said that there are three reasons for serving noodles at weddings. The first reason is to wish the bride and groom a long life, like long noodles. the second reason is to wish the couple a long lasting relationship, again like the long noodles. And the third reason is to wish them a smooth relationship with their in-laws, just like the noodles are smooth and easy to swallow. While wheat noodles are now widely available in Korea, in the past, wheat was not readily available, so it was reserved for making noodles for special occasions, such as a wedding or party.
