태극기를 보았을 때 가운데 빨간색과 파란색 부분의 의미에 대해 궁금해할 수 있다. 이 원은 우주의 균형을 나타낸다. 흔히 ‘음과 양’으로 알려져 있으며, 빨간색 반쪽은 ‘양’의 우주의 힘을, 파란색 반쪽은 ‘음’의 힘을 나타낸다. 두 색이 만날 때 형성되는 ‘S’자 모양은 대립하는 두 힘의 조화를 보여준다. 동북아시아 전역에 걸쳐, 이 상징은 태극기의 다른 상징들처럼 창조, 변화, 그리고 발전의 순환 같은 우주의 기본 원리를 나타낸다. ‘태극기’라는 이름도 가운데에 있는 빨간색과 파란색 원이 ‘태극’이라고 불리는 것에서 유래되었다.

Yin And Yang In The Korean Flag

When looking at the South Korean flag, known as the Taegeukgi (태극기-pronounced tae-geuk-gi), you might wonder what the center red and blue part means. This circle represents the balance in the universe. Commonly known as the yin (음-pronounced eum) and yang (양-pronounced yang), the red half symbolizes positive cosmic forces while the blue half symbolizes negative cosmic forces. The ‘S’ shape it forms when the two colors meet shows the harmony in which the two opposing forces co-exist. Throughout Northeast Asia, this symbol, along with the other symbols in Taegeukgi, represent the universe’s basic principles such as the cycle of creation, change, and development. It is worth nothing that the reason the flag is named Taegeukgi is because the red-and-blue circle in the middle is called the taegeuk.
