According to a January 20 report from The Daily Sports, discussions are underway to set a release date for the film, which tells the story of two legendary figures in the world of Korean 'Go': Cho Hun-hyun and Lee Chang-ho. Go, known as "Baduk" in Korea, is an ancient board game that originated in East Asia over 2,500 years ago. Played on a grid, the game involves strategic placement of black and white stones to claim territory and outmaneuver opponents.

Based on true events, 'The Match' is a sports drama that explores the relationship between Cho, a legendary Go player, and his protégé, Lee. Their intricate bond as mentor and rival unfolds against the backdrop of intense competition in the world of professional Go.

The film stars Lee Byung-hun as Cho Hun-hyun and Yoo Ah-in as Lee Chang-ho, with direction by Kim Hyung-joo, known for his work on 'The Sheriff in Town.' Produced by Moonlight Film, the movie has garnered significant attention even before its release due to its compelling storyline and high-profile cast.

Initially slated for a Netflix release, 'The Match' faced indefinite postponement following the revelation of Yoo Ah-in’s drug use allegations in February 2023. Yoo was accused of habitual propofol use—181 instances between 2020 and 2022—along with illegally obtaining sleeping pills and smoking marijuana under another person’s name. In his first trial last year, Yoo received a one-year prison sentence, with some charges dismissed. His appeal trial is scheduled for February 18.

After Netflix shelved the project, the film’s fate remained uncertain until By4M Studio took over distribution, paving the way for a potential theatrical release. By4M has a history of navigating controversies, having successfully released the film 'The Firefighter,' despite its lead actor Kwak Do-won’s DUI scandal. The studio is reportedly working on strategies to bring 'The Match' to audiences.

If released in March, 'The Match' will mark Yoo Ah-in’s first public appearance on screen since his drug scandal. Meanwhile, another of his films, 'Hi. 5,' remains without a set release date. The film's impressive cast and true-to-life narrative have generated high expectations, but Yoo Ah-in’s controversies are likely to affect its reception. While some viewers may criticize the decision to release the film, its storytelling and production value could still capture audience interest.

'The Match' stands at the crossroads of controversy and acclaim, with its success resting on how viewers perceive its story and performances. As one of the most anticipated—and debated—films of 2025, it could become a defining moment for the Korean film industry this spring.
